ABOUT THE BAND
Healy Ship of Fools not only plays Healy originals, but covers from The Band, Bob Dylan, and the Grateful Dead. Their repertoire also includes classic country & western and blues. Dan’s direct lineage from the core Grateful Dead survivors and the San Francisco music scene means songs are treasure maps to new approaches in arrangements & sonic improvisation. Healy Ship of Fools often has visitors from the historic San Francisco music scene, all adding to the musical legacy.
Legendary Bay Area record producer and recording sound innovator Dan Healy has a new live band: Healy Ship of Fools. Dan is a legend in the world of sound and recording, having created and innovated concepts and techniques that have become standard in the industry. He is renown in San Francisco’s recording world having produced the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Sopwith Camel, Sir Douglas Quintet, Tracy Nelson, and many other Bay Area groups. As a leader in live concert sound, he is credited as the creator of the Grateful Dead’s “live concert sound”. His work together with the Wall of Sound is recognized globally as a benchmark in superlative audio excellence. His background in the San Francisco music scene began in the early 1960s and includes three decades with the Grateful Dead. His musical experience also includes having been in several well-established bands including the Healy-Treece Band. Additionally, he has played on many tracks for in-studio recording.
While most members have been involved in the rich history of the San Francisco Sound, Healy is especially pre-eminent for his stellar work with the Grateful Dead records and live performances. This band is furthering his musical work and is a workshop for celebrated Bay Area musicians.
Dan is joined by veteran players.
MARCUS DAVID
Marcus David is a well-traveled drummer. He’s played with the likes of Clover w/Huey Lewis, Albert King, Barry “The Fish” Melton, Nick Gravenites, and guitar legend John Cipollina, along with a host of others. Marcus’s music represents a whole world of musical culture and expertise.
JOHN RUCH
John Ruch’s twenty years of work with hundreds of indy record labels started in the 1980s. This eventually transported JR from the Boston area to the North Bay. He plays an 8-string baritone guitar with his wife Juliane Poirier and as part of Healy Ship of Fools.
ZACK STEWART
Zack Stewart is the group’s jazz trained bassist and token Millennial. Like all Millennial musicians, he misspent his youth playing house shows in pretentious and intentionally obscure bands with “post” and “core” in their genre descriptors. He carries on the culture of excellence in sound as a bassist of the most unique style.
